Algoa Fly Fishing Society
At last!, a fly fishing club in PE and surrounds. If you are interested in joining the club, send an e-mail to flyfishing@dw-adventures.co.za , supply us with your contact details and type 'Join AFFS' in the subject line. Once we have recieved a significant response we will contact you with details of an evening planned for all local fly fishermen to get together. The evening will include a guest speaker, a video, open discussions, club details, with drinks and snacks available. A.F.F.S is the proposed name of the club, with other options being voted on at the first gathering. Should you wish to offer assistance or help with the organization of events, please state your willingness in the e-mail or alternatively you can contact Stephen on his cell at 083 291 7650.
Once the club is officially established we can look forward to many exciting happenings such as day outings, social gatherings, official club waters and many new friendships. By forming the club we are creating a voice that can tackle issues regarding conservation, preservation and the upliftment of local fishing waters through stockings and management. I personally have identified waters that may be perfect for the introduction of yellowfish, all within an 1 - 2 hours drive of PE.
With its feet on the ground the club will become an independent body, have its own website for members etc. and have the complete management structures in place. Presently this site is merely a means of initiating the process.
Gill Nets
Their is a serious problem of gill nets being used in the Perseverance area, especially where the river narrows at certain sections. It seems that there may be an individual that is actually paying 'locals' to do the dirty work. As you can imagine, the effect of such ruthless netting is having an enormous impact on the population of fish species. Take spring tides for example, where species such as skipjack and leervis will tend to congregate higher up in the system on high tides, and then when the net is strung across, it traps all these fish as they start moving out with the turn of the tides. Even juveniles that may have no commercial value to these idiots have almost no chance of surviving the effects of these nets. I'm sure most of their work is carried out in the dark hours during high tide but they still blatantly leave 3 - 4 running lines across the river in order to string the nets across. Having cut these lines on previous occasions I certainly won't hesitate to do it again, although there are reports of anglers being confronted upon discovering the lines. The quality of line used suggests that this is a functional commercial operation, anybody in need of some running line for a shooting head may wanna snip a section. It is vital that any angler that comes across these lines or has any other information regarding this matter report it ASAP to Marine and Coastal Management (041-5854051) or Swartkops Nature Conservation (041-4660909).
